Several places have mentioned the launch of Safe Count today. I’m still trying to figure out what to think about this.
Looking at the Safe Count website, it sounds like a good, fair and balanced organization, however almost every article and blog that I’ve seen linking to it, makes me think the exact opposite.
According to the blogs, it sounds like Safe Count is a conglomeration of “evil” marketers who are trying to stop people from being able to easily stop being tracked. I completey agree with the people in this case. If a user doesn’t want to be tracked, then they shouldn’t be. Further, it should be a lot easier than the current no call lists, and plethora of opt-out marketing. Just because technology allows something doesn’t mean that we as marketers should take advantage of it.
As soon as users realize what is being tracked, and how ads are becoming targeted, I think a large percentage of them are going to prevent this type of behavior. That’s their right, and it is up to us to reach people in a way that they approve of. We should not be trying to lobby people and organizations just to keep a method that people obviously dislike, valid.
I’m unsure if this is what Safe Count stands for or not, but if they are just trying to keep “cookie tracking” viable, then I hope their mission fails.
